Fried Laptop

I have a laptop that was struck by lightning, and won't turn on. Is there anything I can do to fix it, or at least attempt to do so? The computer is far out of its warranty.

have you opened it up, and check to make sure it just isn't the power cord?

Chances are, it fried the motherboard. If thats the case, and depending on the age. It probably wont be worth the fix.

Well, if the laptop is gone, what would you reccomend as a good cheap laptop to replace it? The person only uses it for everyday things like surfing the internet and checking email. Nothing really intensive.

Which would be awesome, if it weren't from ebay. The person I'm helping doesn't like to use ebay. But I will ask them and see.

Have you diagnosed it as the motherboard and not something as simple as the power brick/cord?

Also check craigslist for good deals on laptops.

I had a buddy who plugged the AC adpater into the firewall and fried it. lol Anyways, that's why I have power surge protectors for my TV and my Desktop (Lola, I named her), and my Laptop.

Before you buy a new laptop you might want to check out and see if its just not the power supply that got shorted out. i would say to open it up and see if all the chips are black or just some of em. Does your laptop have 2 different parts of the plug? because the box connected between the laptop and the plug itself is supposed to give somewhat of a surge protection. And if you do need a new laptop walmart sells a little acer for about 339. its a minibook but it gets the job done.

Plugged an AC adaptor into the firewall??? What the hell kind of a port is that!?!?!?

maconners, have you ever opened a power supply? Unless they are universal, they are also usually enclosed and cannot be opened anyways. And for it to be fried, the chips do not have to be black.

Otherwise, pop the laptop into a local pc store, and see if they will let you unbox and test a universal adaptor. If you tell them you need one soon, and will buy it if it works, they are gonna do all they can to help you.
