completely deleting info off hard drive?

I deleted a lot of personal information off a hard drive that I want to sell or give away to a friend. I want to make sure that the information is not recoverable. So I deleted everything then filled it back up with a dummy file, then deleted the dummy file. I would assume that if someone tried to recover information off the hard drive now, all they would see is the dummy file, right? Does this delete information completely?

You should use a program called darik's boot and nuke to be sure it's gone. It is still possable to recover data after one over write.

well, I'm not talking about just a format, I'm talking about deleting, then replacing the free space with a dummy file, this should push the data that was deleted entirely off the harddrive.

Yea it is alot.

It has been mentioned on this thread, but thought i would throw up a link. Download, burn to bootable cd, and boot with it. WARNING: and i mean WARNING: DISCONNECT ANY OTHER PHYSICAL DRIVES BEFORE USING THIS PROGRAM
