Well im looking for a silent PSU, i dont mind a quiet fan noise like 20db- idle
But i DO NOT want electrical squeal it drives me crazy.
Im looking for something to power maybe 2 260GTX's
so about 700-800W.

All recommendations are appreciated!

"The TX750W fan is not silent, and a moderate increase in fan speed results in a dramatic increase in noise levels. At minimal load, the power supply generates 21dB(A) of noise, which isn't terrible but it isn't great either -- you wouldn't normally notice the power supply when it's installed in a system at low loads. At 50% load the volume increases 7dB(A), which definitely becomes audible. You definitely do not want to run at anything near maximum load, however, as 80% load results in 39dB(A) and 100% load is 40dB(A)! If you are interested in silence (or even near silence), there are without doubt better power supplies"

I own one. Its quiet. Trust me.

Plus with that rig, you are not going anywhere near 100% load, or 50% for that matter.

Silverstone Decathlon DA700

"The highest spin we measured is 1600RPM which produces acoustic noise of up to 23dB(A). This might sound like almost nothing, but as we have mentioned in past reviews the sound pressure levels do not necessarily show the perceived loudness by human ears. A fan can have low SPL but still sound loud to human ears. The fact is that the DA700 power supply will be audible while running with full load, but if you mount it in a PC case the noise will be much less noticeable. Given most users are not likely to draw more than 350W from their power supply - even with SLI or CrossFire - and many users probably won't hear this PSU over the noise of the rest of the system."

ZALMAN ZM850-HP 850W

"Even though the previous graphic doesn't show how the fan accelerates before full load too well, the acoustic noise levels show the results. The fan spins just a bit faster as load increases, but it produces more noise than expected. There is absolutely no noise up to 600W of load; the PSU stays at a constant 17dB(A), which is quite low and not audible running in our acoustic chamber. If the unit is installed in a PC, users will not be able to hear it at all even with higher loads.

Now all you would need is to find two or three really quiet graphics cards and a CPU cooler and your silent system would be ready for this high-power, relatively quiet PSU. Without water cooling this will prove very difficult, since the coolers for today's graphics cards have to dissipate so much heat. Overall, however, both Zalman units deliver a very good performance from the silent point of view"

Both those PSU's are complete and utter rip offs. As the first review says, get a quality case and buy a better quality psu (for half the price) - e.g. the Corsair 650W for $80.

Thanks for the vote of confidence there Freak, i appreciate it.

The point really comes down to what is the quietest component in your computer. No point paying double the price for a PSU that is quiet at 100% load when you are going to be using it at 40% the whole time with the hard drive cranking away at noisy levels.

However, if the OP wants a silent PSU then that is something i have not really ever tested for, so there is probaby some quiet units around. But don't overide quality for noise.

It depends on what you consider to be "quiet". Most people claim something is quiet just because they can't hear it over the noise of their other loud parts. Take a look at silentpcreview.com for a complete list of quiet PC products. I personally don't have any experience with Corsair PSU's, but you really don't see them sold under silent PC products.

edit:
it looks like the Corsair 650 watt model made the list, but the 750 watt didn't. It must require too much CFM to cool effectively.

Well, to throw a spanner in the works. My Corsair HX520 is pretty quite, I wouldn't say it was silent, though I think you'd be hard pushed to find a silent PSU.

Anyway, it's hardly noticeable.

Kornowski don't you have like 20 fans in your computer :P. If you can hear it, it must be loud .
