Hi, Im about to get a wi-fi laptop & want to know how easy it will be to connect to the internet?

Does anbody have any tips on how to get a strong and cost free signal from my home?:confused:
 
You can't use Wi-Fi to connect to directly connect to the internet. Are you planning on just using the internet at home, or do you need something that works on the go? Do you already have an internet plan (ans if so, what)?

If you already have a broadband plan, what kinda router do you have? Does it have multiple etherner ports? Is it wifi-capable? Can you hook your laptop to the router using a cable, or does it have to be wireless? Unless you really wany wireless, I recommend you use a standard Etherner cable because setting up a secure Wi-Fi network is going to be a real pain for a beginner.

If at home and you have your Wi-fi set up it should be as easy as walking within range. However you need to take into consideration security(depends on where you live). If you need wireless everywhere you go then you'll have to get a form of cellular internet.
 
Thanks guys, i will use it mostly at my girlfriend's house as she has a wireless network. I dont have internet at home but i didnt know if i'd be able to pick up a signal from somewhere:

E.g there is a petrol station about half a mile away from me claiming to be a wi-fi hotspot, But im guessing that will be too far away.:(
 
Yeah a half mile is to far. Its illegal and dangerous to piggy back on peoples wifi without permission, you need to invest in some internet for yourself.

Unless your GF has a wireless router you wont have wifi in her house. Just remember if its unsecured becareful information can be filtered while your using the connection. I'm sure its not illegal to use it if its unsecured network(public). Just don't connect to a secure/locked network as that is illegal.
 
Thanks again, Yes she has a wireless router (secured) And i also dont see how it would be illegal to use a public wi-fi hot spot if i could get a signal. But agree that it could be dangerous as other people could get my details.

If there free public points its not, I was referring to using it to connect to your neighbors signal or something.

I think its time to set up a Internet Conection at home . Use wireless u will love it i've been using wireless now for 4 or 5 years and it rocks really. I have a good speed and its so easy to connect ones u set it all up in the biginning.
