What Windows 7 version will you get ?

This is dumb, what is going to happen if you have Vista Ultimate but want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional? Are you going to lose features? Is it possible?

This whole version thing is dumb and confusing to consumers. They should just go to one version period, or perhaps two like they did with XP.

It also seems that Win 7 Ultimate will not be available for purchase directly but only as an upgrade. So you are forced to pay for Win7 Pro, then pay again for an upgrade. No pricing has been released yet. The Windows 7 DVD will come with all versions on it (since it is the same OS but feature limited) and you purchase your license online, and you have the ultimate upgrade option afterwards. Which will make installs ridiculous. Way to go MS by putting tons of DRM into your OS.

Just another reason not to use Windows IMO.

Well it seems they are only releasing two versions to the public. Windows 7 basic and Windows 7 Professional. Business will be only sold to coporations or other enterprise networks. Starter is aimed towards netbooks, as it is suppose to be a micro version of Win 7. Though I bet netbooks continue using XP, there is no reason to upgrade a Netbook to Win 7. Then you have ultimate which you can't buy outright but have to upgrade after the fact

Turns out they are only going to put home premium and pro on the shelves. The upgrades are included on the disk, but you would need to go through windows anytime upgrade.

And pay for them, then run all the updates with in windows itself. Sounds like a bunch of BS to me. I also doubt Netbooks will try to adapt a bloated OS on a Netbook.

I'll probably get Home Premium, any feature that Ultimate has will have free alternatives or hacks that unlock it (look at Dreamscenes). I think Win7 is excellent in its current state and as long as they don't remove anything they already have in the "superbar" I will be happy. This is probably the first UI update I find genuinely useful, most of Vista's UI features were nice but weren't really productive, the new thumbnail system actually has a use. I don't see a reason for feature limiting that would be beneficial to the consumer other than the Win7 for netbooks. Netbooks need a slimmed down OS to run their best so yanking services that netbooks don't need would only make it run better.

It is highly rumored that Ultimate is now geared towards gamers and enthusiasts, whatever the heck that means. They may feature limit something you don't like, like better directX support.
 
The version I am getting is not listed there, HA! Because I am not getting it! (Bad joke)

I am gonna stick around with Ubuntu, OS X, and Vista/XP.
 
I don’t know yet, depends on the price.

I really do expect MS to be greedy though and put a high price on it again.

If they sold it at a respectable price say £50 -$72 a copy, then they would sell more copies than lose copies to pirates.

If only Linux or OSX played all windows games and windows apps,It would be over for MS ;)

The same was said about Vista Ultimate and it had no advantages in gaming. They aren't going to cripple gaming in order to make money, that is just bad business especially since many people stay with Windows because of its game support, intentionally crippling a major factor of sales would only kill M$ even more than Vista did.

No Vista Ultimate is was to have every feature, this time MS is releasing two copies to the public consumer, with Ultimate being an optional upgrade. They are gearing utlimate towards gamers and enthusiasts. No one knows what that means and no one will know what that means until the end of 2009 when they release it.
 
Why can't MS take a lesson from Apple and have just one version of their OS... and as far as 32-bit and 64-bit goes, it wouldn't be that hard at all for them to just sell them together with the same license...

well looks like theyre gonna charge over the top for the Ultimate version then,i wonder why its going to be aimed towards gamers?
this is going to be intresting.

all i can say is,microsoft you better not mess up this time or your sales wont ever be the same again :D

It is pure speculation at this point, and it could very well change. Win7 is slated to come out at the end of 2009, which well allows me to say I told you so to every Vista user out there that Vienna (now named win7) will replace Vista in a few years.

However, someone from MS did say that Ultimate is an extra add on you purchase in addition (with no prices being released again, speculation) to either Windows 7 home or Windows 7 professional. So, it looks like Ultimate from my guess won't have domain support, you get that in professional. Otherwise you could simply buy Home for cheaper and then add the cheaper upgrade cost to Ultimate to get the domain level support.

I think it is fair to speculate that Windows 7 Ultimate will be geared towards gamers and enthusiasts. I bet it has a ton of built in multi media features and other components that help gaming.

I think MS should just release one version and get over them self personally. I also don't see Windows 7 start being ran on Netbooks. XP and Linux already pretty much have the Netbook market, and I mean there is no real incentive to change that from both a manufacturer's point of view as well as the consumer.

Do you have a netbook? Have you used both XP and win 7 on a netbook? As an owner of a 900HA with windows 7 on it I can say that yes, people will want 7 on netbooks. Maybe not starter edition (I suspect thats to keep the overall cost of the netbook down), but these things are perfectly capable of running windows 7 ultimate in it's beta state, and while being snappy like win xp is on these things. The added features (wireless capabilities is a huge one here) make using my EEE PC even nicer than before. I mean, when I'm on the road it automatically scopes unsecure networks and connects to them. I can literally (provided there's wireless around) open up my netbook and start surfing the net...no screwing around with ANYthing, just open up firefox. I know thats a feature straight from Mac OSX, but I dare you to find me a netbook with that OS on it :P In short, yes, (most) consumers will like windows 7 on netbooks (well, at least 9" and higher models...the 700 series doesn't support Aero)

Though I do agree that having 5 different SKU's it's stupid...and it better not be too expensive, or I'll change my mind about giving them money.

At my work we have a 1500 or 2000 netbook deployment. I have played with them. We run XP on them, but the one I was testing out I exclusively ran Linux on it. I have no installed and ran Windows 7 on a Netbook. Your experience with that is more than what I have. I was purely speculating.

Also, there are most likely third party apps that do what you described for XP. Sure I am a fan of running that stuff native and having a command line for it (like Linux and OS X), but that is me. I am not the average user. You are not the average user, you are obviously an advanced or power user depending on how you would want to describe yourself.

That being stated the people that are already running XP and like it, and are the average user, will most likely want to stay with it. This of course is just my opinion.

I hate 3rd party apps, the less of them the better. Especially for stuff that should be built in. Command line...no, not for me, haha. I prefer the visual stuff, just text and commands give me headaches. I would describe myself as a power user, but I also do computer repairs for people (which undoubtedly leads to trying to explain how to do simple tasks..) so when I see features that will hopefully make it easier for the computer challenged people I jump for joy, less explaining for me. You wouldn't believe how many times I get a customer bitching about how they use Vista so obviously what they want to do won't work(or it's not the same or whathaveyou)...but then I show them how to do it in less than 10 seconds (usually easier than XP) and then look at the complete change in attitude. "Oh, well how do you do this? Well thats easy!" I don't know why..but some people suck at learning new things...I suspect mostly to do with they simply don't even try

And yes, you are correct. A lot of people will still stick to XP...mainly because they've been using it for years and don't want to switch. Thats just a personality trait..me and a few others embrace change...we love the new features, looks, and improvements. I certainly don't mind having a few things moved around...especially when it makes things more streamlined.
