I would like to download a free defrag program that will put all the data on the outer edge of the hard disk platter. Does anyone know of any?

Thanks!

Yes there are programs that do place data on the edge. I found one it's called Ultimate Defrag. In it you can do a recency defrag and put data on the edge based upon when it was last acessed or last modified or creation date. It takes a long time. It does fragment the files up when it's moving them but don't worry about it, it does defrag them later.

It also increases seek time if you use partitions. 1 partition for OS and Apps, and one for data files. Since data files just read once and they are done, there is not a lot of activity on that partition. however, the OS and App files are access a lot.

It takes a HD a lot less time to sift through a 80 gig partition than it does a 500 gig partition.

Is there a program that moves data so there is none or hardly any free space between data on the hard drive?

I have ultimate defrag. It's definitely your best bet. It will clump all your files together on the outer edge, putting the most used files the furthest out, and then defragging.

get the trial of PerfectDisk, it has a Smartplacement method that does exactly that. Run it for a while to optimize your disk and then just use a freeware defrag to keep it that way.
