CPU temp...and cloning

Hi all,

I installed n Asus M2N68-AM mainboard in a Compaq (HP) computer that had an Asus M2N68-LE HP-specific board. After resolving different driver issues with board CD and updates, everything seems fine.

Two questions:

I used the old heatsink/fan (for Sempron 3600+), but the fan was running full-tilt, and sounded like a jet engine. Sice it was a three-conductor fan, I couldn't use the PWM control. I decided to rig the 12V fan line to a 5V line, and it works. Starts up fine, runs about 2000RPM fairly quietly, and the CPU temp is about 36C degrees, with the MB around that. I guess that's OK?

Secondly, I'm sure if something happens that the Compaq recovery disk won't work. It'll probably tell me something like "This is not licensed to use on this computer"? So, I want to image the drive before I do anything else, and I SHOULD be able to recover to a working point from that?

Anyone use Acronis True Image? Is it reliable?

Thank you,

temp seems fine. I'd stress it using prime95 and if it doesn't get above 60c it's fine.

Acronis true image is great works every time.

Thanks, Viper.

Now, someone is trying to tell me that creating an image of that drive won't work if I try to restore it, "because the MBR will say it's not valid for that computer". HUH?

Before I spend $40...does this person know what he's talking about? I know the ORIGINAL restore disk won't work properly because it's got a different MB in it, but I assumed that a cloned drive is a cloned drive, and if it works now, it should work with a clone?

At my last job, we cloned thousands of computers (hundreds each of different ones) from Altirus with the same images. They didn't care about the different MB IDs.

Ignore that guy? Or, did HP do something that WILL make it impossible?

Thanks,

i used drive image XML, which is a free program. i havent yet mounted my image to a new drive, but my brother and many others have, and said it works perfectly, so you may want to check it out.

it sounds like you want to make a backup image of the system running on the new mobo, right? if it works now, you shouldnt have a problem...i dont think

i don't know why that guy thinks the mbr will say it's not valid but it's total crap. As long as you don't change your computer hardware you'll be fine
if you want to do some research on your own --->wikipedia mbr
