Guess I'm lucky

My father just happened to have Visual Studio .NET 2003 & 2005 Student Professional versions lying around. He also had a license for VisualPearl (now discontinued). I spent ten hours on my laptop yesterday installing the newfound software and can't wait to start using it. Does anyone else have Microsoft VS .NET?

Yeah, unfortunately I use Visual Studio.

Don't run into it like it's going to be a walk in the park. There's a lot to learn when starting programming so just take it in stride. And when you spot something stupid that the language creators did just take it 'with a grain of salt.'

I would never recommend any new programmer start in Visual Studio. It will spoil you. I started in Visual Studio and had to break a few habits when I moved on with Mac and Linux development. I'd recommend starting with Python or Lua.

Thank you for the advice. Although starting with another development tool would be preferable and advisable by most experienced programmers, I do not currently have the funds for anything else than what I have at hand already, which is, as stated, Visual Studio. As of now, I can't take programming too seriously because of the concentration needed towards my current academia work. As for the future, I hope to have programming and element design a prominent focus, especially for my major, which of course I hope will be of said interests.
