How do i install linux?

Hey i have downloaded Ubuntu Desktop Edition but i have no idea on how to install it can anyone help me out here

Usually you would boot it from the cd like you would windows. Put it on a cd and make sure that your first boot is set for cd thru bios. That way it can partition your drive for the Linux.
 
Well whats your plan? To install it on a partition or to just delete your current operating system and replace it with Ubuntu?

Have u used it before? Cause if not you can try the live CD (which you downloaded) and you can just run it from a CD and then when you want to install it you have the option. Boot from your CD drive by the instructions above, and select the option to try it. When your in the GUI, there is an install link on the desktop, you can click that and follow the instructions.
 
Don't delete the current OS (Xp or Vista ) You can install the Ubuntu side by side with windows in one hard drive and it wil ask you how much Gb you want to give theUbuntu space just use 20 to 30 Gb . The only problem that I encountered in Ubuntu it's kinda hard to set up internet connection up to now I don't have internet. Good luck.
 
ok its not working for me it gets bout 30% through copying the files an i get a input/output error i have re burnt it an re downloaded it with the same problem.
My questions
What file system should i use?
where do i put the boot loader?
 
I would say put it on a disk and set that to boot first or you can wait a few weeks and order the free CD from Ubuntu and that has the option before the disk even loads to install or run desktop version

EXT4 file system.
Boot loader will wipe your windows MBR without asking.


As for the input/output error, did you at least check the checksums to be sure your download was correct?
