Laptop screen light problem

My sister has a laptop and every once in a while the screen gets really dim. Is there a way to fix it or is the backlighting just going bad? THx for any info.

well its happened on 2 laptops now, my sisters compaq with xp and a friends mac. Ill have to ask her when it gets dim. thx for quick response

idk about the mac but also depend on the brand laptops automaticly go into power saving mode to make there batts last longer so they dim the screen by themselves
