Is Wireless Router the Answer?

Need to know what to do: I want to hardwire a computer to keep speeds at the max, and then have wireless access for my kids to be able to use their I-pod Touch (2 of them) to surf, get youtube stuff, i-Tunes and then maybe add PS3 and 360 wirelessly both. Can I do this with just the wireless router? I see that many on here like Linksys WRT54g-gl, are these good choices for this situation? I imagine the signal (what is the tech term for this? LAN?) can be blocked so the neighbors cannot access it. Any other info is appreciated.

Excellent choice for a router(i have one myself), Linksys makes good stuff. I'v had problems with all my routers except my Linksys. You can add security by creating an encryption key. This can be done in the routers settings. Its an algorithmic password basically. That should work fine for all those devices.

A wireless router is just what you need. Most home routers have around 4 ports for network cables so you can hook any computer straight up to it. All wifi routers allow some sort of security, any modern router will let you set a WPA key which is usually enough to keep most people out unless they know how to hack into a wireless network but I wouldn't worry about that much. The Linksys WRT54G is a nice router, I use one and it has worked fine for the last year and a half.

as a note, you might want a wired connection to an xbox 360 because it allows media streaming which can get sluggish over wireless and you do not want any slowdowns while playing games.

Does the PS3 need to be wired or is that good? The consoles are upstairs and the computer and router will be in the basement. Live in a ranch by the way.

Id put the router somewhere in between the floors. The Ps3 has wireless, and iv had no problem with it working across the house with my Linksys.

We live in a ranch so there is just the main floor and the basement. Do all PS3's have wireless? My sons friend says that the 20 gig does not (that's the one we have) but all the bigger gigs do.
