High end build

I know there must be over 9000 of these threads on a daily basis and I apologize for making another, but I've never built a rig before. I'm interested in making a fairly high end gaming PC. Here's my setup thus far on newegg,

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Deluxe
Video: SAPPHIRE 100251SR Radeon HD 4870
RAM: G.SKILL 4GB DDR2 800
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
Optical: LITE-ON Black SATA
HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB
Case: Antec Nine Hundred

Any suggestions and / or constructive criticisms is highly encouraged :) . Thanks.

Looks like a good combination for a midrange build. While I have the X-48 chipset and highly recommend it, they are quite a bit more than the P-45 and I assume you are working within a budget. For a few bucks more you might consider 4850 X 2 GPUs and 1066 RAM.

The ASUS P5Q Deluxe he specified is a high end P45 mobo, which cost $190...

It's not bad, but if you can afford it I would reccomend going with a core i7 920 and an Intel DX58SO board. You get high performance (quad core with 8 Hyper Threads) at a relatively low price. Plus if you are'nt planning on overclocking its ok because of the unlocked memory multiplier and turbo mode. Another suggestion is going OEM on places like Tiger Direct (just to make it clear to the moderators i'm not advertising just giving an example). OEM is good especially for things like hard drives and disk drives because it lets you buy high end stuff at a low end price. Good Luck on your build!

by the way i forgot to say with my suggestion you would have to go to DDR3 memory which while a tad more expensive is mush better than DDR2. My system that i am building with these upgrades cost about $1800 (thats with a very expensive case) you just have to know where to buy the stuff cheap. Do LOTS of research. Again Good Luck!

I think you are over spending on your motherboard. You can spend around $100-$140us and get a great p45 chipset mobo that overclocks fine. For a single GPU setup the Gigabyte UD3R is great. And furthermore, with one GPU you are over doing it on a PSU as well. I have plenty of power with a 650w for my 4870 1g. And if your going 2x4870 than 750w may not be enough. Go 1066 ram, and remember a single 4870 needs 2x6 pin power cables when picking out a PSU. I would also consider going quad core(C2Q) to ensure your computer is viable for a longer time period. The E8400 CPU is a great CPU but duals are on there way out.

I did some revisions to my list, here they are.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX
Video: SAPPHIRE 100251SR Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB 512-bit
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready
HDD: 2x Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM
Case: COOLER MASTER COSMOS 1000 RC-1000-KSN1-GP
RAM: 2x G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

Price isn't really that big of a factor. I want something that will run ANYTHING with fairly high fps. Thanks for all the replies and info. :)

Also, this is primarily going to be used for gaming and I heard that i7 and E8500 preform nearly the same when It comes to games.

Dont buy a 8500...if price isn't a very big factor then upgrade to a quad. If not get a 8400 and OC it, I can walk your through if you need help. I got 3.6GHz on mine without voltage changes. Everything thing else looks good.

I saw i7's for sale for just over 200$ at micro center like a month ago. The i7 seems like it's in another league from the core 2's. If I could redo my 2 month old build, I wouldn't consider anything but an i7.

I like it. Try not to worry about making a top build.. they change on a monthly basis it seems :( if you were to overclock, you'd definately be a happy camper.

After doing some research I decided to go with a i7 build. What do you ladies think?

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W
Motherboard: EVGA 132-BL-E758-A1 LGA 1366 Intel X58
Video: ASUS EAH4870X2/HTDI/2G/A Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB 512-bit
PSU: SILVERSTONE OP1000-E 1000W ATX 12V 2.2 & EPS 12V
HDD: 2x Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM
Case: Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX
RAM: G.SKILL PI Black 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

you should only need like a 800-850 watt if you're only getting one 4870x2

Noted. Any other comments / advice? :)

Here's another little update.

Case: Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX
CPU Cooler: COOLER MASTER V8
Monitors: Dual screen Hanns·G HW-191DPB Black 19" 5ms Wide screen
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM SATA

Also, would a ASUS EAH4870X2/HTDI/2G/A Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB 512-bit be a good choice for this particular setup? Sorry for all the questions. Never built a rig before and am in no way an expert on this particular subject matter.

I would stick with Western Digital harddrives. Heres why #1 #2, even tho is the 2 link it says 500gb's it happens too almost all the newer drives.

The 4870x2 is a great card. I just suggest that you don't buy 2 of them. If you have plans on a multi card setup maybe down the road I would go with the GTX285. You will have issues with the GTX295's in sli so I don't advise getting 2 of those either.

The rest of your build looks solid. Great choice on case ;). Also If you are getting such a potent video card I would look at a 22" or 24' 1080p monitor. It would be a waste to use it on just a 19" monitor.

Thats where i got my I7 920 from. I got the last one from the store i went to. And the guys at the pretended to know what they were talking about, trying to get me to get some crappy video card.

edit: sup thermal

you definitely don't want to run such a sweet setup through a puny little 19" :D I had my setup initially using my old 19 and the difference between it and a good quality 24" is huge. Here's a crappy cell phone pic I just took to give you a little comparison.
