Router having problems loging into modem

For some reason my router acts up and doesn't like to "talk" to the modem. The modem is set up using PPOE and the router accordingly. It works great for a couple hours or so and then just randomly drops. When I go to the router config page, for some reason my router is disconnected from the modem. Even if I hit connect, it won't. It's almost random when it decides to reconnect. Anyone want to share their $.02 with me?

Just a question, have you bridged the modem with the router?

If you direct connect your PC to your router and login to it. It will have the option somewhere to bridge it to a router so the router can handle the connections as opposed to the modem doing the work. You will need an IP for your router and it might include a checkbox or something to enable the bridge. Also, if needed, turn DHCP off in the modem.

You're basically setting the modem up to be your main gateway to the internet rather than to handle connections. So it will 'bridge' the connection from the LAN to the internet.

Yeah idk what you are talking about. I went to the router config paged and looked through all the settings and there was nothing about "bridging" or anything like that. All I know is that my router has to sign on to my modem using a username and password (PPoE).

Right but the bridge functionality is what throws the network responsibility to the the router.

I assume it's a DSL router...

I had a similar issue, my connection would drop maybe once or twice a day, and I had my Linksys WRT54GS router configured as PPPoE. (I would need to input the DSL username and password into the router to access the internet). I decided one day to just set the router to DHCP instead of PPPoE and I haven't had any problems for 2 months, the connection is 100% stable.

When I configured the modem to run DHCP I did not need to enter any information into the router it was just plug and play.

I'm 99.999 percent sure you're having the same problem as I did.

Yeah I tried DHCP and it didn't work at all. I am thinking it's more of either a faulty router or a problem with the ISP.

Well I just updated my firmware and used dd-wrt firmware instead of linksys. I've used it in the past and it's some great stuff so hopefully I won't have the same issues.
