Slow defrag

I'm running Defraggler to defragment this computer. It started out last night and shot up to 53%. I left it on overnight and it's finally at 55%. Would it have anything to do with the fact that the data on the hard drive is apparently divided into two sections? As far as I know, the drive isn't partitioned. Thanks for any input! It seems like it's only slow when it gets to a certain point.
 
you're probably using ultimate defrag with the option of putting fast files on the outer disk and slower/not frequently used files in the inner disk. the faq explains everything.

for a fast defrag just choose the option "fragmented files only."
 
Yeah that would make sense, but the only problem is that the defragmenter starts out very fast, and once it hits 53% is moves at 1% an hour, sometimes even slower. Sorry I forgot to provide a picture last time.

No, that's just normal hard disk behaviour. It sticks stuff the first place it finds enough room. Usually FAT32 is slow to defrag but yours are NTFS. I'm not sure why it's running so slow...are you running out of swap space maybe?
 
I don't think so, how do I check that? It defrags the first section of data quickly. There is a high ratio of yellow to green, if you've used defraggler before. Once it starts the second section of data it transfers one block at a time, exactly like in this screenshot. At the beginning of the defrag (you'll have to follow me with the picture) the top block of data ended at the second row, directly below the 4-block chunk of framented data on the right. Does it seem like it's trying to move all the data together?
 
Alright, back with more news. I found that the defrag slows to almost a dead stop once it reaches the end of the first block of data. I also found that most of the files are over 1GB and are classified as "System Volume Information". Could it be trying to defrag the huge files, making it run slow?

did you check out the faq. each defragmenter has it's own method. however, a simple defrag (just defragging fragmented files) should be very quick. if you're using some special method like organizing files based on recency, name, last opened, etc then obviously it would be slower.

lastly, if the slower files are due to large files then it would make sense. in order to piece the files together you would have to move other files out of the way to make room. however, my defrags never take more than an hour using the "name" method. again, it's important to read the faq that came with the program
 
I use AusLogics another good free one, very fast .
You did have a total of 76.2 gigs fragmented :eek: , this is going to take a while, but 1 percent an hour seems a bit slow.
Is that 20 gig D drive a partition, or is it an old drive?
 
I think it's only a partition, there's only one physical drive in the computer. I could probably try a different defragmenter, but it's just weird that it almost stops once it reaches the end of the first block of data. It speeds through the defrag of the first block, but once it reaches the end of it, it seems to just stop. I even tried to defrag the freespace, it completed but it didn't do anything.
 
I see your using defraggler... i find it likes to find files that are fragmented as it makes its way through, to start off i would just click analyze, go to file list, then select all the files so it doesnt decide to defrag more files on its way through. Then after it defrags all that, hit defrag again and let it go through any files it didnt defrag first time... dunno why i gotta do that, if i dont it always gets stuck at around 99% lol.

That seemed to help, thanks. It completed but it still has 65GB of fragmented files. It seems they are all from the System Volume Information. Does anyone know what that is?

You should leave enough space to run disk defragmenter.

Besides, you also have to check whether you have set screensaver or not. When the system has finished 10% of defragmenting process, then the screensaver is open, your computer has to clean up from the beginning again.

Therefore, you are supposed to close down the screensaver so as to let other background programs complete defragmentation. After doing that, you can start the “Disk Defragmenter” in the Windows to see whether it get right or not.
