I'll try to explain this the best i can.
everytime i try to install the installation stops.

'Error 1402 setup can not open reg key:
hkey_local machine\software\classes\applications\winword.exe\taskbarexceptionsicons.

Actually i understand why nobody would be interested in going into any detail about this. i am only looking for a quick thought. i queried microsoft and found the information for the fix. they pretty much said change the permissions to everybody. Ok.........i tried. when i tried to add everyone its saying can not find. i tried my admin profile (with admin rights) and also two backup profiles with admin rights. i tried all admin profiles with rights. none shows up. tried creating another / new profile and reboot. no avail.

I try to change anyway and just get a error:
Unable to save permission changes on taskbar exceptionsicon.
Access is denied.

Any thoughts or ideas?
im using xp pro
tried regedit and regedit32.
took back to an early date.
same thing.

When during the installation process? I gathered it was during installation. :)

Can you modify anything with regedit yourself? Note: VERY RISKY!

Actually...can you even launch regedit?

i made a back up 1st of the registery. im familar with it though don't do often.
ive tried regedit and regedit32. same results.

Oops, pardon me. I overlooked that in your first post. :o

Have you tried rebooting at all? Perhaps even into safe mode?

One more thing: have you had any version of office installed on your machine before? Also, have you tried modifying the permissions of the key in question? Just right click on that key and choos "Permissions..." If your account is not listed there, add it.

Ugh, I must be blind today... Did I miss CCleaner in your first post, too? :P

I am still curious to know what is listed under the permissions for problem key. For your account, or any of the admin accounts, do you have "Full Control" checked?

Ya lost me. are you talking about profile?
I don't see anywhere ive checked where there is an option for 'Full Control'.

When navigating to that key within regedit, right click on it and select "Permissions..." You should see a list of users with granted permissions in the top portion right under the Security tab where it says "Group or user names:" and right below that you should see "Permissions for <Name of Selected User>". When you click on your user name in the top, what boxes are checked below?

thats the problem. no names showing up. i have one i use always. grandpa, admin, admin1. if i type in a name like grandpa. (can't find). if i type in admin it finds. change the rights then click ok and get the error.

Security
Unable to save permission changes

Which service pack do you have installed on XP?

I think 3 was the last. im good about at least looking for updates. I pretty much just do security and critical only unless i needed it. i do not take all. Just pick and choose. its the latest for XP Pro though.

it won't let me access the directory to see if anything is in there.
i tried to delete taskbar exceptionsicon (directory).

Error:
Cannot delete taskbar exceptionsicon : error while deleting key.
