WD 320gb external hdd not working?

hey im only 17 and ive got 3 desktops and 2 laptops to mess about with =]
my first computer was the dell 2400
my newest laptop is a dell studio 17

what about you?

Well, at the moment I am down to two operating computers - one server and one desktop. I have one more server to get up and running if I ever take the time. But...if I look over into the computer museum I seem to be running in my storage room...there are probably a baker's dozen (give or take) different computers. Most of them work. One might just be a shell...

wow what a history LOL
btw, noobish Q but whats the diff between a server and a desktop, dont they operate in the same way, same components?

For the most part they use the same components. Some servers may have more industrial strength components than are found in consumer systems or redundant components (like dual power supplies). It really depends on the build/environment/type of server you are talking about. The biggest difference is in function.

Most people use their desktop/laptop as a primary working (or playing) computer. You browse the web, play games, do your finances, etc. (it just depends on your priorities ;)). While a server on the other hand is usually set up for dedicated purposes like internet routing/firewalls, hosting files, streaming data, web hosting, email retrieval/delivery, dedicated game hosting and so forth. In many instances, servers are also run without a monitor, or "headless" as it is called. Also, servers can operate as a regular desktop and some folks do that.

I use my server for many things. I set one up for personal use back in college so I could FTP (and even email) large files back and forth without bothering with the expense of ZIP disks or burning CDs. That was also when I started ripping my entire CD collection. I had some clever software (for then at least) to run my own personal jukebox - the web interface was very similar to what iTunes is now. I would then log into it during class or at the library and listen to my entire music library streamed over the web while working on projects. :) Now my server's purpose is much more boring...well sort of.

For starters, what kind of budget are you looking at?

and i want it to be kinda future proof. =]:good:

Future proof, eh? How far into the future? Nothing technological is truly future "proof." I prefer to call it Future Resistant. :)

haha resistant, well price range hmmm,
say about £500-£600 and maybe more ?

You could have a very nice system for that price range. I'll see if I can dig up some parts for you. I am sure a couple of other people will weigh in as well.

thanks, just to inform you, i'd like if i could have a mobo that could support up to 8gb/12gb (8gb would be perfect) coz i think that'll be future resistant for a while lol

erm thanks for the help though, its not that easy to find decent people on some forums, but this one seems to be full of em.

EDIT: ive started a thread in computer section about my computer for uni !

You are welcome. There are quite a few nice folks around here I've been noticing.

I'll hop over to your new thread to follow up.

Well done!

I would say more, but the comments are all coming out very inappropriate (unintentionally). Too tired... :D

too tired? nah just tell the truth, your hammered! Pissed! Drunk dont lie! :D

:D No, nothing of the sort. (Pissed maybe, but that was for another reason...)

I kept trying to come up with some way to say "hard drive", "girlfriend", and "inside" in the correct context without the inherent abundance of innuendo. :P
