If you want to play games at higher resolutions, then the extra VideoRAM becomes more and more necessary.

I would agree with Leopold. The 280 is a better move, but again, in your case, you would even see a marked improvement with just a 1GB card of any upgrade. Just work out what you can/want to afford first. ;)
 
Do you have a CF compatible board? Because another 4850 would bump you up to the higher end cards FPS without breaking the bank in a lot of games, maybe even surpass in some cases. If you don't though, the GTX 28X or maybe even the 295 if you're feeling particularly rich would be a good upgrade you wouldn't look back on.

It is a great card. If you can crossfire I am not sure you would want to since not all games support crossfire. If you do get the 280 make sure your power supply is at least 600watts.

The GTX260 216 core model is a great deal right now.

As for the site... I'm not quite sure about it. The last graph and following paragraph are a bit strange. I do not see how a 46 fps lead equates to 9 fps/15% advantage. That article is rife with inaccuracy and jarring mathematical errors. How is 143fps just 32% better than 97fps??? I wouldn't trust a bit of it.

From what I have seen, the GTX260 and the HD4870 are pretty close in performance with the GTX260 leading by a small margin at high settings. Try this article instead.

How much gfx mem would I be using at 1920x1080 res with maxxed settings on dif games? Wud I need more than 1GB? I was willing to dish out the money for the 280 but the 260 is a great deal n I rather save $100

That depends on the game. Each game will use different amounts of graphics memory depending on several factors (like texture quantity and sizes). Some may max out the card, some won't even come close. I am not aware of any graphics cards with more than 1GB of memory per GPU. You wouldn't gain much of an advantage anyway with current games.

My friend is willing to buy my hd4850 for $100 so I wont mind spending another $200ish to get the 285. As long as it can max out UT3 again like the good old days :).

Well, you won't have a problem there. ;)

I am pretty much able to max it out at 1080p with a 1GB 9800GT.

thats good to hear :). I have a 1080p monitor but I rly cant tell the difference :/, but I use a DVI cable b/c my HDMI wont let me see BIOS/boot up screens

Is it the HDMI input on your monitor that won't allow the boot screens to display? And the DVI input side will?

What monitor do you have?
 
HDMI and DVI use the same protocol for video transport. HDMI is really the next evolution of DVI, and it will also carry audio whereas DVI will not. You will not see a difference in a DVI connection vs an HDMI connection.

Odd that the HDMI port won't display the lower resolution. I guess Acer could have saved money on the electronics to only allow true 480p/720p/1080p signals on the HDMI port.
 
thx. I was wondering, would my Q6600 @ 3GHZ bottleneck a gtx 285 at stock/OC speeds?
