OEM software discount for new builds?

I'm reading " Building the Perfect PC " which came in the mail from Amazon today.

In the 1st chapter - there's reference to significant discounts on OEM software when you buy a new MOBO or SATA drives - etc. I hopped on New Egg looking for OEM discounted software - and can't really find out what the author is referring to.

Does anybody here know if that is still available - and if so - where / how do I look for discounted software like MS office / Windows OS / etc.

Thanks

OEM (original equipment manufacturer) in this case refers to software that is discounted for system builders.

her is an example of windows vista ultimate 64 bit OEM

Keep in mind that the reason OEM licenses are discounted like that is because they are locked to the first machine you activate them on. You can't move the license from say your first desktop to a new laptop a few years later.

Yeah - the book mentioend that. I'll have to look at price savings to see if there's a reasonable justification to go one way or another.

Re : O/S shouldn't bee too much of a problem - b/c I am currently in the collecting and saving all computer mode right now. I've got 2 running right now - and when I build a 3rd - I'll probably have 3 to possibly tinker with 1 and have 1 as a backup / storage system of sorts.

Well, if you ever intend to move the OS to another machine, purchase the full retail license, not the OEM. I've had the same license of XP for quite a few years now. It moves with me from machine to machine. It has been on everything from an ancient Pentium 2 to a Core 2, several virtual machines over the years on various Apple computers, an iMac, back to an Athlon64 X2, now in a virtual machine again... All in all, probably a dozen or more seperate environments.
