Free Video Converter?

Anybody know of any? I've looked and looked and they all want me to pay to use their shitty software. Are there no good, free ones out there?

I'm mainly trying to convert .mpg into an avi

On any dvd converter on the right hand side you can change all the options and what the resolution of the output will be. Ive never had an issue with widescreen formats so im not sure what the deal is.

My settings are:
WMV V9
1280X720
bitrate= 4000

and the videos look great, obviously some quality loss, but not much.
 
To keep the aspect ratio of widescreen videos correct in "Any Video Converter" select Edit>Options>Video>under Video Resize check the box next to "Fit to width" and "Any Video Converter" will retain the aspect ratio of your videos.

Hmmm, I've had a look at the options and it will do it, but it resizes the video.

Thanks, I tried that and it resized it to 720 x 406, I also tried setting the resolution to 'Original' and '720 x 576' and neither worked.

When I import them in Premiere too, there's black lines either side of the video.

Dammit, bastard MPG's!
 
You can try mediacoder. Until now I only use that to convert video. The best thing you can convert to almost any format and many option you can select,, and its free!!
