What's the lifespan of a CPU socket?

I've read about old technology and MOBO's not being supported over time. My 5 yo P4 is obviously useless in terms of upgrading MOBO - but beyond that I don't know the time frame of technology support and upgradability with MOBO and CPU.

As a newbie learnin and plannnig future build - I'm thinking within the next 8 months or so - an AMD 3 Socket will be likely build.

* Will AMD3 MOBO's be the norm
* still leading with lots of AM2 and AM2+'s being sold
* or will AMD3's be on it's way to replacement with a new AM3+ or AM4 be on it's way into the market?

AM2 has lasted quite a long time now, i think that AM3 will last a long time as well. maybe, 5 years down the road, you could still be buying slightly outdated but still fast cpu's for it.

Look at how long socket 775 has been around.

AM3 should be around for a while. I would bet that the AM3 and AM3+ would be fairly similar just as their AM2/+ siblings. I doubt AM4 will be coming within 8 months.

That's the point of this thread. I just started learning this stuff 2 weeks ago. I haven't a clue how long the socket 775 has been around. :confused:

The LGA 775 socket was introduced in 2003/2004 along with the Pentium 4. It is still in use today with the Core series of Intel processors.
