Is there any negative effects of port forwarding?

Title basically says it all, is there any negative effects of forwarding a port for a router?

It opens ports on your network. So a hacker can get his way in if he wants. However if you know what you are doing, you should be fine.

Well I'm trying to do it for a program (probably can't mention it on this site, but I guarantee everyone knows about/ uses it). I keep getting extremely bad download connections, will this fix that?
