Recurring “Blue Screen of Death” :

Whenever I try to power down my circa 2006 Dell Latitude D820 laptop … it gets to where Windows XP Professional says it’s closing down … there’s a short delay and the “blue screen of death” pops up. It reads:
= = = = =
“A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU’VE SEEN THIS STOP ERROR SCREEN, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. IF THIS SCREEN APPEARS AGAIN, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

CHECK TO MAKE SURE ANY NEW HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE IS PROPERLY INSTALLED. IF THIS IS A NEW INSTALLATION, ASK YOUR HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE MANUFACTURER FOR ANY WINDOWS UPDATES YOU MIGHT NEED.

IF PROBLEMS CONTINUE, DISABLE OR REMOVE ANY NEWLY INSTALLED HARDWARE OR SOFTWARE. DISABLE BIOS MEMORY OPTIONS SUCH AS CACHING OR SHADOWING. IF YOU NEED TO USE SAFE MODE TO REMOVE OR DISABLE COMPONENTS, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, PRESS F8 TO SELECT ADVANCED STARTUP OPTIONS, AND THEN SELECT SAFE MODE.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
*** STOP: 0X0000000A (0X00000304, 0X00000002, 0X00000001, 0X806E6A16)”
= = = = =
This has been recurring for a while now and always when I attempt to power down normally. Finally, I too force a cold power button down to turn the computer off. If I leave the laptop up and running … where it goes into sleep mode when not in use … I usually have no such message. Rarely does it occur while the laptop still powered up. I’ve tried doing a System Restore but that doesn’t help.

I’ve switched computer operations to a new Dell Vostro 420 desktop (under Vista Business) where my working files now reside. I keep the laptop handy for occasional mobile ops and as a backup computer. What are my best options for eliminating this bothersome “Blue screen of death”?

Thanks.

Most commonly associated with a bad stick of RAM.

Download Memtest86.iso and burn to a cd. Boot from
that disc and let it run.

If you see RED, bad news.

A few days ago I briefed my son (who is a computer tech in NYC) on this problem.

This evening he called to say he just had a similar problem where he worked. He said it was due to faulty RAM that had to be replaced.

If this is the case, would you say it's simply a matter of replacing the RAM in my laptop?

Thanks
