win7 64bit ????'s

so i'm getting a new rig and will be making the switch from winXP PRO SP3 32-bit to win7 64-bit (want the increased RAM capacity ;) and have a few questions...

i hear a lot of win7 32bit but nothing of the 64bit version, any reports?

how goes the drivers list for win7 64-bit, will most games / programs work right away or will it be a total cock up VISTA-style?

is there a way to take my winXP programs / games and simply transfer them to a win7 install? (i think i hear you calling me stupid which is why i think the answer is a LOUD NO, but want to ask to be 100% sure :)

will games and such be compatible? games like quake III that i love and newer games like COD4 / 5, far cry 2 etc?

do MOST programs work with 64 bit any OS? and is a specific version of the program required, ie, you need to buy a seperate 32bit or 64bit program depending on what OS your using....or is it all on the same install?

sorry but i haven't changed OS in 7 years (i think) which is like 70 computer years and just want to be sure my stuff will work :) plus, this 64bit OS thing is a new thing to me as well.

thanks in advance!!!

I did exactly what you're planning on and it was a great decision. Windows 7 x64 is very compatible. I have had no unrecognized drivers and most were auto installed. I have not come across one program that didn't run or at least have a x64 version except daemon tools. All the games you mentioned are fairly new so they will run fine even with similar if not better performance. I don't know of a way to transfer programs but you would be better off reinstalling them anyway. Overall it is a very stable OS and you will like your move. :)

with windows 7, most if not all of the vista drivers are compatible. so if its compatible with vista, chances are its compatible with 7.

I"ve installed Windows 7 about 6 times on different computers, and I've never "needed" to install a single driver. It always finds a driver automatically that will at least get the device working properly.

I started with Win 7 x64 on my i7 build, and everything I installed on it ran fine, except Punkbuster. Go figure. There was some process running that PB didn't recognize so it wouldn't let me play online, so I went back to Vista Ultimate.

Love Windows 7 x64, only 1 problem for me is, it does a memory dump for some unknown reason. Drive me nuts. I'll but it later in the year from the first start date tho.
