Suddenly...nothing plays

Since I turned my laptop on this morning nothing has been working right. Media player, youtube videos...anything that 'plays' just doesn't. Tried system restore but it didn't work. The advanced systemcare program I have doesn't detect any viruses, but I think it's a bit old so maybe it doesn't detect new viruses. Found nothing after a bit of a Google. What can I do besides restore to factory specs?

update java and flash and stuff like that? could possibly be a virus

nah mine did that...
turned out my RAM had gone video card went hawire
