Microsoft Have done it again

Way to pick faults. It's only just hit RC.

yeah, but it MS and Windows, people are always gonna be picking faults lol

and at least it has been found out now and MS might have to do something about it before the actual release...isn't that the point of beta (etc...) releases?

Is this something that will be updated and fixed on a RC operating system - or are live fixes like this only available when it goes to Retail distribution.

Yes it will be fixed. these issues have always exist. thats why they beta and rc. they get auto feedback so they can compare. and if its true or in error it will be fixed then released. its called testing .......

This is pure user error. Yes it's a security issue but almost all of security is people.

If you have hidden known file extensions and then see something called file.txt do you really think windows forgot what a text file is and is showing you the extension? Yes a lot of people are fooled by this but a lot of people are fooled by emails saying their bank details may be comprimised and click the link and give away their bank card number and pin. It's just the same old social engineering tricks.

Besides, just about everyone turns this feature off. :P

keep UAC on and no matter how much a virus wants to modify your windows directory (the location most malware likes to hide malicious dlls), it just can't unless you let it. Hell, windows usually knows if an exe requires admin rights because it puts up a little shield on it.

Not sure if I asked the question cleaerly enough or not.

I know that MSFT will fix the problem before releasing a retail version. My question was - will Microsoft fix it on the fly - as in -

1) will there be a patch in the next week or 2 that will fix it while it's still a Release candidate -

- OR -

2) Will things like this be fixed before final release - and while it's a R.C. it's pretty much - ya got what you got as a test run - and we'll fix it before we sell it to the general public.

I think quite a few people are missing the point. This isn't a flaw in windows it's the way windows has worked from day one. It's simply and option to hide or show file ext. I personally don't hide file exts myself but it certainly keeps noobs from breaking file associations.
