than the i7 965? Without overclocking, because I'm not gonna spend $1000 on a CPU to take that risk. Thanks :]
 
the i7 975 is coming out soon, that seems to be 3.33ghz if i remember, but like mikesrex said, get an i7-920, or phenom 955, they're much better for the money

Good for the price, but compete nowhere with i7. Also, getting an extreme edition cpu is esentially useless, as you can overclock the 920 to pretty much the same clocks. And, as far as overclocking is concered your not really taking a "risk" unless you are dumb about it(eg- raising it to super high voltages or using bad cooling). You can get an i7 920 and decent watercooling setup for about half the cost of an i7 965 and overclock to speeds higher than a 965 would get to.
 
The Phenom II 955 is a little steep in price compared to the i7 920 processor which is a lot faster for only $35 more.

I would go with either the Phenom II 810 for $170 or the i7 920 for $110 more.
