Different Branded Ram dims

Hi

Just a question. If you have say four ram slots, and you put 2 sticks of ram in of say gskill ram. Can you then at a later date put two more sticks in of a different brand etc?

What if anything needs to be the same?

Technically, you can if they are the same speed, but it is HIGHLY recommended you get the same kind.

Yeah, it is... But just check the backgrounds on the RAM itself, the actual manufacturer. Micron, Samsung, Hynix, Infineon, etc. I have used different sets but it's better to stick with the same. Some brands like G. Skill, A-Data, Mushkin and Corsair have rebranded Micron chips.

Yeah, the advantage to running matched pairs is you can then run in dual channel mode, but you shouldnt have any compatibility problems running two different manu's.

I only ask cause in my new build I have only got 2x2gb Gskill DDR3 1600 at the moment (was costing too much) but Id very much like to get another 4gb down the track for my other to slots. And I was wondering what if the Gskill ones I have now are not around at the time of second buying or are rediculously over priced?

Also... what does dual channel and tri channel actually do?

Its better to have matching pairs, but they will auto clock to the speed of the slowest set. And will still run in dual channel. You can fool around manually with the timing and voltage if you want better timing with them. Its just alittle harder with 2 sets that have a different default timing and voltage.
