I know they are used to attach HDD to a MOBO?

I'm looking at a MOBO with 5 SATA connections - and another with 10 SATA connectors. What else besides HDD's are they needed for. I don't want to get a MOBO and find out it doesn't have enough capacity of what I need.

Thanks

Four is pretty much the standard, and a lot of people only use one or two. You need one for the hard drive, and maybe one for the CD/DVD drive (depending on what kind you get). Any more than that, you would only need if you want multiple hard drives or CD/DVD drives. Few cases can even hold more than 5 drives.

I would go with no less than four......I use all four of mine; 2 HDDs and 2 DVDRW..... Wow 10 Sata connectors...now that's overkill, sure that isn't a server MB?

I use 4 out of 8 on mine, only because I don't have any money for extra drives to RAID :(
But about 6 is plenty, even 4 for the average home computer.
