Need some help with selections.

Ooookie dokie. The computer I'm currently working on is my first build, and I've got about 500 bucks left to work with. I've already purchased my case, graphics card, and PSU (in this case an Antec 900, Radeon 4870, and a 610 Watt PC Power & Cooling PSU.)

I'm looking to build the rest of my computer along these means (I had a parts list, but have made so many changes along the way that I don't even remember what they were.)

I've got about 500 bucks to work with right now, and am hoping to buy the rest of my parts (perhaps not all of them, but definitely put the parts I'm unable to afford within striking range.) The problem I'm having is with my motherboard, CPU, and RAM setup.

I'm thinking about getting the ASUS P5Q Pro and Q9400, both seem to be rated pretty well, but I'm really unsure of my choices (I'm bad at making choices :( )

First of all, what kind of RAM should I be looking at, and how much? Second, is this CPU an appropriate choice? I'd probably be OCing it a little bit, and naturally would be putting an aftermarket cooler on it despite tales of its running at low temps.

So yeah, if I have any more questions I'll post them, and thanks in advance if you feel like pointing me in the right direction. :o

Edit: Oh yeah, I put this in the motherboards category because it's kinda about what works well with this mobo, is this a good mobo to be getting? The price sure is right.

Asus or Gigabyte are very good boards in my opinion. I have been working with these mobo for a long time now.

With the prices as low as they are now, this is a great time to buy a quad core CPU. I have always used AMD. Never had an issue.

As far as RAM, corair, gskill and kington are pretty good.
 
Thanks :D Any recommendations on what kind of RAM I should get, in regards to speed and type, that is. DDR2/DDR3? Honestly I haven't done a lot of reading up on RAM like I have most other parts.
 
Whatever the specs are on your mobo calls for. DDR3 is going to be faster than DDR2, it is also going to cost more. I think there is DDR4 also. Now your talking money!

Pick out your mobo first then go from there.
 
Mmkay thanks ^^ I think I've got all of my parts picked out, and I'm ready to go. One last thing though, regarding my CPU this time. I've heard that a picking out a dual core CPU that OC's well will work better for gaming than a quad core CPU, though the quad core I picked out seems to OC well regardless. Any insight on that?
 
All depends on your clock speeds. Whether or not you'll be water cooling.
But in all reality, I think quads would do better in gaming than duals though.
