Added RAM now computer's slower?

I just added two 512mb sticks of RAM that I scrapped from another computer. My performance actually appears to be hindered...

Why would that happen?

Is there anyway I can benchmark the computer before and after i put them in to see if this is true?

I am use ubuntu and I know that the sticks are being recognised so that's not an issue.

Thanks!

I wrote this in your other thread
Check the speed of the sticks that youre adding to the computer, and the sticks already in the computer. If the ones you're adding are clocked at 533MHz and your computers RAM is 800MHz, the RAM will now be working at 533MHz, it's only as fast as it's weakest link

The sticks I have in there are 400mhz and the scrapped ones are 333.

So which is faster... 3 gbs at 333mhz or 2 gbs at 400mhz

Now that I took the sticks out it might have actually been a couple seconds quicker at opeing some programs.
What do you think?

Well then your gonna have a small difference in the actual speed, and you lose dual channel capability by not having matched pairs. Decide for yourself if you would rather have ram speed or ram capacity;)
