Best card for a single core on a 939 mobo

I don't want to throw money at an overkill card when cpu would become the bottleneck.

I have:
AMD 939 mobo
AMD 3500 cpu
1 gig ram


What's the most sensible pcie-16 video card to get the most out of it?

6800 GT?
x1900?

Should I add 1 more gig of ram, or 2 more gigs?

More RAM will not hurt, although DDR is getting spendy.

I ran a 8600 GTS in my 939 and it worked well.

I would only spend around $50 for a card on that board.

If you look at my sig, I'm running a 939 Athlon 64 X2 and a 9600GSO so that's what I recommend for a card.

NewEgg had the 9600GSO 384MB back for a few days. Looks like they sold out. They still have he 512MB card though.
 
I didn't know the 939 can support dual core. That sounds like a nice upgrade path--$50ish for your cpu.

Why did they choose 384MB I wonder? It seems like a strange number to settle on when everybody else makes it either 256 or 512. :shrugs:

Yupp. The Athlon 64 X2 3800+ is about the highest processor you can go with he mobo I blieve. You can get an X2 on Ebay for a decent price.

As far as the memory on the card, I have no idea but it beats my old Radeon X1650 512mb Pro by a longshot and a half.

CAUTION- the 512mb edition is the new 9600gso, which has 48 shaders vs the old 96 shaders on the 384/768mb cards, and is basically a lower end version of the 9600gt, vs a 9800gt with 16 less shaders. Entirely different gpu's....same name.

It was dirt cheap, when DDR2 came out. lol Now it's back up again.

I think it's because they don't make it anymore and it costs companies overhead to stock it. ? Idk

Anyway, it's not that horrible, just twice the price of DDR2. lol

What motherboard do you have exactly?

Well, look at ddr2, it has been surpassed(well... kinda... not quite yet) by ddr3 so it is cheaper. DDR is end of life, and since it is not manufacturered anymore, they sell it at a higher price as its starting to get harder to find, plus they have been holding on to old stock for awhile.
