alright, so yesterday i was going to update my drivers and i came accross a site. i didnt notice the small porno add at the top so i downloaded the .exe (lol) so I ran it and nothing happened (in terms of what it was supposed to do) im using google chrome so i knew right away that it was going to be something bad cas as soon as i opened it i saw the porno add at the top. so any way, i could't open google chrome after that because it would give me the application error. so i restarted the computer. then it would get to the welcome screen (windows xp) and would restart every single time. so then i did system recovery because it came ia partition of the hardrive on this computer. it worked almost perfectly besides the couple of freeze upss during it. alright so then i started the computer back up after the system recovery. everything was going fine until i connected to the internet. all the suddon the screen literally filled with symatic scanning a bout a hundred different emails that ive never seen before. they were spam emails. I guess my question is, is there any way to get rid of this .exe that is still here even after the system recovery? would norton do it? if there is anything you are confused about plz ask because i am kind of rushing throught this post. thank youi

alrisht its running. do you think this will work? some more info: i was just getting a lot of application error msgs and i had to restart computer. and the messages symantec is scanning are like msgs for weightloss and crap lol

Well, norton is a horrible antivirus to begin with, even avg free would be an upgrade from it(which i would recommend going to avg since it has better active threat detection). MBAM finds quite a bit of malware and whatnot, so i wouldnt be surprised it it doesnt solve (most) of your problems. When it is done scanning post the log up here;)

well if you have an operating system disc i suggest you repartition the pc unless you would like to memorize windows registry and file system.

i will... as soon as i et back home and run it :P i should probably run it in safe mode right?

Yeah, run a full scan in safe mode;)

ok so i removed it, but when i connect to the internet they just redownload themselves. any ideas on how to stop this? i will post the results when i get upstairs and turn on the computer. also everytime this has happened it was xp sp1. i am trying to upgrade to sp3 but it keeps giving me an error in the system32/drivers folder saying that one is in use. are there other updates that need to happen first before i can upgrade to sp3?

Get a firewall and u nothing would get in, or get out of ur pc without ur permission. I would suggest commodo firewall. U can use windows firewall as well, but it is not so powerful as third party firewalls are. Or alternatively go for a paid antivirus which includes evrything including firewall. I use Avira Premium Security, and i would recommend you as well. U get a fully functional 1 month trial if u want to give it a try.

Other than that, i would suggest Kaspersky.

I think you need to remove the malicious software off your hard drive before you can upgrade Windows to another Service Pack.
