psu is making a high-pitched squeel

I had first thought the noise was coming from my gfx card, I was absolutely sure is was "coil-whine" but have come to realize its coming from my psu when a game is being played.

Its an antec 650W powering an e6600 and asus 275...

is this normal?

is it just because im using a cheap psu?

Antec's aren't bad power supply's. Not the best, but not the worst either. If you're certain the sound is coming from the PSU, I'd RMA it.

Most squeals are caused by a dry fan spindle. You might try putting a tiny drop of oil on it if you can reach it.

I think my sisters rig has a dry fan since it is has a constant squeel but mine only does so when i'm gaming, I guess because my gfx card is sucking more juice

Return...something...authorization. They mean return the power supply :P

The probably could be the fan as mentioned, but failing components such as capacitors could make squaling noises too. Regardless, if it's brand new, I'd stop using it ASAP and return it.

I probably wouldn't worry. Like you said, coils whine. It's not a defective product.

They may whine because they're new, under increased load or just generally. If it's super loud, you could RMA it.

its loud enough to distract me... the thing is over a year old so returning it is outa the question.

I guess i'm now on a quest for a quiet psu, any suggestions?

I had 2 older cpu including the one I'm typing on now and they both use the antec psu. Does the same thing on start up then quiets out. But as soon as I start to game or run applications the psu acts up and is very annoying. I since went to OCZ without a hiccup. :D Maybe my luck, dunno, but I'm done with antec psu.
