Which drive is better for ripping CDs?

I've noticed that my DVD-Rom drive can read scratched up CDs better than my DVD writer drive. Why is that? Shouldn't the DVD writer drive have a more powerful laser because of it's writing capabilities.?

a laser eye is a laser eye in my opinion, try cleaning it out. Perhaps your writer gets used more than your dvd rom?

I have used them before in the past to clean out my PS2 back in the day and it seemed to make improvements. Then again I went through 3 PS2s in my life time.

I've used them on my Xbox 360 and have had no problems. PS2s were known for having bad laser lense.

PS2s were just known to break. The guy that manages the gamestop down the street told me he has gone through 7 PS2s already. Granted dude works in a game store, is a manager and probably gets tons of free games from vendors and sales reps, but still, DAMN, 7 PS2s?

I never thought Sony made that quality stuff either. My PS1 had a plethora of problems. My PS2 did as well. My nintendo form 1985 STILL works!

I know what you mean. My old Super Nintendo still worked and was able to sell it for $60 with a few games.

nintendos back then were made in japan. nowadays sony, like other japanese corporations, outsources parts from everywhere and if you see a "made in japan" sticker on the cover it just means that the cover was made in japan. learned this the hard way when i took my sony sz laptop and my external buffalo hard drive apart.

This shouldn't happen my friend try cleaning out the device with blower.
Eject the CD plate and blow the air inside the device using blower.Don't use hair dryer !!!

Please don't use VCD head cleaning CD's which has small brush on the disc, it will more hang out the laser head lens.

What kind of blower are you referring to?

Dicha know?

A Compact disk has data packed into it in less denser conditions than a DVD. You probably know that data is written onto cd's into a spiral track pattern. A DVD simply has increased number of these spiral tracks. If you get an audio cd and drill a hole through it, chances are the cd will work fine. Even more, A cd uses a larger pit size onto where data is recorded, these are the little bumps where data is recorded. Hence it is easier to rectify these pits than the smaller dvd pits. So its not just that its a dvd writer or a reader. Now, a dvd writer basically uses 2 lasers. But it not physically 2. When it reads a disk, it uses the normal reading laser power and when writing, it uses the high power laser. A dvd writer never uses a "more powerful laser" when it dosent need to! So it comes down to one thing. Its your DVD drive, one might be better than the other, one might have better features that allow it to read cd's better, features from the manufacturer. Clean dvd's using a cleaner disk, remember the softer the disk the better. Or just to be in perfect peace of mind, open your drive up and using a delicate brush, some alcoholic cleanign fluid and a lot of skill, clean the drive yourself, oil the motors a bit and oil the laser assembly.
