If you didn't know it, Alienware has been taken over by Dell some time ago. Fortunately, this didn't change much, at least on the surface - the Alienware brand is still on the market, and its products are the same as before - expensive toys for gamers... only that, if I look closer, some of them are real bargains!
The Alienware M17X is just another gaming laptop from Alienware, packing the following specs:

- A single 1GB nVidia GeForce GTX260M GPU (upgradable to dual 1GB nVidia GeForce GTX 280M GPUs!)
- An Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz P8600 CPU (upgradable to a Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core CPU)
- 4GB of RAM (Up to 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM)
- A 250GB 7200-rpm hard drive (upgradable to a 1TB 7200-rpm or to 512MB of solid-state storage capacity [Raid 1 or Raid 0]; users can swap out hard drives by removing the battery)
- A slot-loading DVD-RW drive (upgradable to dual-layer Blu-ray Disc)
- A nine-cell battery
- An nVidia GeForce 9400M G1 GPU with HybridPower technology
- 802.11n Wi-Fi
- An optional 1920-by-1200-resolution edge-to-edge LCD
All that, right inside of the black anodized aluminum hood, just as I love them!

Price? Who cares about the price, when talking about Alienware machines? Probably not those buying them, but - as I was saying earlier - some of the Alienware products are really well placed into the market, and the Alienware M17X is no exception to that rule, starting at $1,799.

All that goodness comes at a hefty price tag. Starting at basically $1800 I'm sure you get a "stripped down" version. I may be wrong though.
 
Congratulations, you are enlightened. I will probably get the 280Sli/qx9300 (not sure where to buy from) 500gb 7200rpm, and WUXGA combo.

And humanmage, those specs are REALLY GOOD for a price like that.

$1800 gets you an nvidia 260M GTX, 1440x900 res, 250gb 7200rpm hdd, and a 2.4ghz cd2.

Overpriced. Shipped my $3300 M17 back to Alienware because it wasnt worth the money. Couldnt even play Far Cry 2 or GTA IV on MEDIUM settings. Just an imo

Those are good specs for the price? For $200 more you can get a quadcore and a 4870x2, 4gb memory,i think 1920x1080res and a 500gb hdd in an asus... Alienware is overpriced imo. Sager has some with better specs for the same price too:

So you had the quad core? Have you done ANY research about the quad core stuttering problems? You should have before you purchased it.

@Bomberboysk, are you blind? The sager only has a single 280m GTX, not two. The alienware offers a low price configuration with a 260M GTX, and you get get dual 280M GTX's in it. Also the alienware's bios supports CPU overclocking. It also has a nvidia 9400 graphics for good battery performance.

ALSO, the $1799 M17X has more ram, and a faster hard drive for $600 less than that sager.

And you're calling the q9000 a good quad core? That's the WORST quad core, $170 more on the sager, $200 more on the alienware. Big difference. And that first link has a single 280m GTX, not dual supported. Where the hell did you get dual 4870's from? edit: nvm about the last question. But how could you think that a 17" notebook that supports a single graphics card, comes standard with 2gb ram, and has a graphics card that may be slightly better than the 260m gtx, is better than the alienware laptop? Is the sager aluminum? Does the sager support integrated graphics for actual laptop use? Does the sager support light pulsing, for night time use? Does the sager come standard with 4gb's of ram and a 7200rpm hard drive? NEITHER of them do.

Alienware laptops are built like garbage, they have always been overpriced for what your actually getting and now they are owned by DELL who if you've noticed havent done themselves a favor for quite some time. I believe the last good thing DELL did was the XPS line and even that was sub-par. I will admit the latitude line is somewhat durable but alienware laptops are plastic junk.

Dude... just because you got ripped off into buying an alienware laptop doesnt mean you need to defend them, sager notebooks are probably the best made, and as i said earlier, show me a core i7 in an alienware...
