Difference between these two motherboards?

What is the difference between these two Gigabyte motherboards, the GA-MA770-UD3, and, the GA-M720-US3.

The specification says that the M720 has a NVIDIA nForce 720D MCP chipset, and the MA770 an AMD 770 / AMD SB700 chipset. What does this actually mean?

Also the M720 supports ECC RAM,

Support ECC memory (Note 3)

Note 3) Use of a CPU that supports ECC is required if you wish to install ECC memory.

This means that if used with a Phenom I / II it will just take normal RAM, correct?

Finally, the specifications list:

1 x CPU fan header
2 x system fan headers
1 x power fan header

What is a power fan header. It is a standard three pin fan plug as far as I can tell. Is it just a fourth fan plug?

Thanks, Doug.

They are pretty much the same board. One just has a Nvidia 720 chip, the other has a AMD 770 chip. They both just use regular DDR2 memory.

Thanks for your answer, I realise that, but how is the chip going to effect me?

I am not a gamer, I use the computer for uni work, which consists of CAD and photoshop, hence the quadcore CPU.

Thanks, Doug.

Id go with an amd chip there, as usually those are supported for a lengthier amount of time as far as bios updates for new processors.

I agree, go with the AMD 770. It has the SB700 instead of the SB600. Performance wise there's probably not any difference. The SB700 might even be alittle better. Nvidia is having a hard time right now with board chipsets. Since AMD bought ATI. Nvidia is competing against two processor companies that now both make there own chipsets.

Before AMD bought ATI they did make some chipsets, but they were just, I guess you could say OK. With the ATI buy out a lot of people forget that not only did they get a GPU chip division it got AMD back into the motherboard chipset game too. Sorta left Nvidia as far as board chipsets go, the third man hanging out.

OK, Thanks guys. Any idea about the Power Fan Header? Doug.

Dont really know why they still call them that, some PSUs came with a three pin connector with only one wire, you could hook it up to that and monitor the PSU fan speed. You can still power a fan off it just fine.
