Dang - video cards get toasty

I've been wondering my video card feels like it's not moving any air outside the back vents ( my first real video card - gaming type of usage for a PC ). Tonight was playin Call of Duty - WOW - and when I was done - much to my surprise - it was blowing pretty nicely a nice stream of hot air outside the back vent.

Since this is my first real video card - what kindof temps are normal when gaming - what's a temp I should be concerned about. I'm thinking about downloading speedfan - or some other similar progam ro keep an eye on video card temps. I haven't even set up dual monitors yet - I suppose that would cause even more heat generation.

Video cards are probably the hottest component of any given system. They can handle much higher temps under load than say a CPU. When you get to 90*c or so I would start to get concerned. I know the 48XX series of ATI cards are notorious for heat. Can't comment on the recent Nvidia cards, but I would expect relatively high temps on stock cooling considering performance. Downloading a temp monitoring program however, has nothing but benefits, so I would recommend that ASAP.

I got the Precision software so I can crank up the fan speed to cool things off a bit. But it's good to know they run notoriously hot - I won't spend so much time worrying I'm gonna fry my PC when gaming.

My Case has a fan vent ( right next to my video card - where I can add an intake fan. Would there be any benefit to cooling my video card - if I have a forced air intake at that location?

Set your gpu fanspeed to 100% with evga precision and notice the instant drop in gpu temperature:P

I did that - and yes it drops like a stone. Also makes quite a fan noise. Maybe that's why they make headphones for gaming ... :good:

Whenever I run a game - I'll crank up the fan. It's fine at normal speeds for most anything else I've thrown at it so far.
