Need Linux help

Christ on a freaking cracker when will people stop filming their desktops with a camera and freaking use screen capture software? WHEN WILL IT HAPPEN?

Also crappy ass techno music should not go into every freaking computer related video. I wish I could slap people over standard TCP/IP when they did this!

Ok, rant over

What are your system specs? What flavor of Linux do you want to use? Yes you can dual boot and resize your partition, and yes the Linux installer will do all of that.

Just need more info from you on your computer and what you want to accomplish exactly.

lol
well im basically noob
on my stuff
i basically just want my computer looking like tat

how would i get all my info?

What processor you running? How much RAM, that sort of stuff, or if it is a prebuilt what make/model is it?

Is it a laptop or a desktop?

its a desktop,
windows xp

i think 2-3 gigs of ram

180 gigs of memory

30 gigs of external hardrive (broken ipod lmao)

procescor stuff i dunoo
my brother gave this to me after he built his super computer

So it is a custom build then?

Right click on the My Computer icon and select properties, then select hardware info and it should open up device manager and show you your specs.

hp pavilion amd athlon (tm) 64 x2 Dual
core procescor 3800+
2.00 ghz 3.00 GB of ram
physical adress extension
is tat it

i dont see no hardware info

OK just so you know I am sort of a grammar nazi but I am going to let that one slide.

Umm, I don't have any XP machines at my home.....I only have one PC running Windows and it is a Vista box. OK, if you right click on the my computer icon and go to properties the second tab over should be labeled hardware I think and if you click on that, then you can hit the device manager button.

There is a youtube video of it though so follow the instruction of the video

OK so you would want to download a 64bit version of Linux to make sure you get the benefits of your 64bit processor. What type of video card do you have?

Do you know what version of Linux you want to use?

grammar nazi lol

for the truth i have no idea wat this stuff is lol
and not sure wat video card i have i already downloaded
fedora 11
and ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386

Nvidia GeForce 7300 which is a DX9 card I think....

OK, so first and foremost before you do anything on a computer what should you do? Make sure your data is backed up. I would back up anything you would hate to lose. I am not going to be responsible for anything you lose so you should back it up first.

Then, lets start off with say Ubuntu, download the ISO and burn it to a CD/DVD and then once that is done we can boot from it and run through the install process.

but wouldnt tat erase xp from my system?

Technically, no, because we can resize the partition to allow Linux to install with out you losing anything, however, if something goes awry your data can be lost. Data loss is always something that may happen, so it is best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

so if something does go wrong
would my computer be ****ed up so tat
it wouldnt work no more?

and do u have a msn or aim
so we can talk faster

Don't post your email on a forum the spam bots may get it and before you know it you may have like 5 million emails in your inbox. I use jabber, but am not logged into chat at the moment and I am about to read a book and then go to bed.

If it screws up your OS will be hosed and everything will need to be wiped and reloaded. I strongly suggest you back up your data first before you even think about loading Linux. Furthermore, know that Linux is something you can't just dive into. It takes time and patience to learn. Most people that use Linux try it for a few days, few weeks or maybe a few months and then go back to Windows because they don't take the time to learn the differences.

I've been using Linux for like 9 years now and I still learn new stuff about it.

wat data should i back up

i thought i could use linux and xp at the same time?
and im on my computer alot
ill learn to use it

Anything that you do not wish to lose, documents, pictures, music and data files that you can't recreate. Programs and such can be reinstalled and should not be backed up. You can run Linux and Windows on the same machine but not at the same time, unless you install Linux as a virtual machine.

Which may be better for you to start with a virtual machine. That way you can learn the basics then wipe the virtual machine out and do a real install when you feel comfortable.

well can u teach me virtual machine then?

and , i cant make a jabber it wont let me,
is there anyother way we can communicate faster
