New CPU

Hey guys, I'm about to build a computer for a friend since his last one lost that magical smoke that made it work.. He doesn't have much money so what would be the cheapest but still good dual core he can get?

I was thinking along the intel line.

Thanks

Would the E5200 be able to handle games like Crysis and Supreme Commander?

Why the AM2+? It is actually surprisingly cheap

Because socket 775 is end of life, the only upgrades in the future would be a current core 2 quad, no new processor releases will be made on 775(as intel is transitioning to two new sockets). If you could spend more though, the Phenom II X3 is an amazing cpu for the price. What kinda price will be spent for the whole rig?

nice rig man here is my rig

EVGA nForce 790i ULTRA SLI FTW
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33 ghz
6 GB Triple Channel Kingston DDR3 1333 RAM
2 X EVGA Nvidia GTX 9800+ (SLI)
Cooler Master CM 690 ATX Tower
Corsair 850W PSU
2 X Western Digital 500GB Caviar Black

the one thing i hate about my rig is that it cost me about 1300 total

and i could have done a core i7 build for that much... buyers remorse oh well...

Lol! I know and with the guys who like said he lived in Ohio so, so strange..

Wow, Thanks mitch.. Those are pretty epic builds.. One thing is my friends really really poor. So maybe Mobo and CPU max at the moment. Since everything costs x2 over here (New Zealand)

Hes already got a HD, Graphics card and AMD cpu but meh, I think he wants to go intel..

Bah, Not enough money! Branded computers cost SO much!

Plus he only wants to spend around 300-500 NZ Which is like 200ishUS

Lmao =] But thanks anyways

if your going for that budget and going intel you will have to go for a lower end dual core cpu and then you'll maybe have enough money for a good motherboard like gigabyte, asus but if you were to go amd you could get a better cpu and motherboard for around the same price..... I use both amd and intel and in the dual core's thiers not much difference....intel will give you better performance but not alot.

Look at these combo deals:

I really don't suggest Intel at this moment.
With AMD he'll be able to get an AM2+ board and cpu cheaply. If he just wants dual core, he can get the 7750 and ASRock A790GMH for $145 USD.
If he has DDR2 memory that he wants to use, he'll have to get an AM2/AM2+ board.
It's not that big a difference at this point between DDR3 and DDR2. DDR2 he'll get cheaper, and can still use his own. My AMD 720 BE can overclock to 4ghz (albeit unstable) on my AM2+ board.
The chipsets from an AM2+ and AM3 board are currently the same (790x, SB7xx) so the main difference is going to be DDR3 and upgradeability.

yah that's why i put that list up thier....the 7750 is a good medium/high cpu but id don't know about ASrock..maybe he could get one of the asus one's with integrated graphics just incase his card goes out....

geez thats fine for you, wll in my opinion intel is quite nice too actually, even if i triewd AMD i prefer much of the Intel's since i seen a lot of good in performance management
