I starting to wish list parts for a new rig. These two cpu's are around the same price so wondering which one would be better? I will be using it for gaming, internet, and burning of dvd/cd. I would like to be able to play any game.

This a good AM3 board that meets the budget.

Phenom II quad-core (superior an same price range)

Phenom II dual-core (great reviews and can help budget)

I think it would be a waste of cash to buy anything less then the Q9550 or Phenom II so if its out of your budget id wait and save...will help you in the long run.

Is you psychic? Cuz the OP never stated an overall budget...:P

i would just slapp a 720 black in the build :D thank you, thank you ,very much :D

Yeah the 810 is a hard sell compared to the 720, higher stock clock, unlocked, overclocks higher in general, has the full 6mb. of L3 plus its only 139 bucks. And if your lucky with the right core and board, you got a quad. But I would not buy it just for that reason, you might not have a quad. The first four are good enough, the fifth is just a bonus.

Well, on certain boards you can unlock the 810 to have the full amount of cache. But i would still say, quad>tricore.

Well out of all these benchmarks on both pages the 810 only beats the 720 in 2 running stock. The 720 wins 11 benchmarks.
http://ixbtlabs.com/articles3/cpu/amd-phenom-2-720-810-920-p2.html

For example, the 810 processor looks much better than the Q8200 and the Q6600, which has a much larger cache. Phenom II X3 has a significant advantage -- the third core. So it's a more promising product, demonstrating no worse, or even better performance in most tests. In fact, this processor makes dual-core CPUs justified only in the budget category, which lacks triple-core models, or in case of some specific tasks.

How many of those are fully SMP though? Cuz i know things like archivers dont really take advantage of more than 2 cores...

About the same as normal person would use in real life. Plus it beats it in about every gaming benchmark. Add to the fact that its easier to overclock and clocks better. Plus 139 BUCKS, A 139 BUCKS MAN:D.

Really its kinda like AMD competing against itself. One has 4 cores, one has higher clocks, unlocked and the full L3. 30 bucks difference. They are both good processors for the price.

would the 810 with ddr3 ram still not compare with the 720BE with ddr2? The benchmarks that I read had the 810 winning on the processing aspect on tasks. While the 720 did better in games. And wouldn't the am3 board be better future wise?

I would get the Phenom II 720 Tri-Core Processor since it is $30 cheaper than the Phenom II 810. Also get the GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P Socket AM3 motherboard which uses DDR3 memory.
