I'm shopping for a new laptop and wanted some input on the finger print readers vs an encrypted hard drive. Do I nee an encrypted hard drive if I have a fingerprint reader?
Is there a way to bypass the fingerprint readers? How reliable are each of these and what could go wrong and cause me headaches later?

You do not need an encrypted drive for fingerprint reader. Fingerprint reader is just an alternative to password typing. You have to fill in ur password in the fingerprint software. and when required, it will automatically enter ur password, when u swipe ur finger. It stores passwords for different screens. For example, when u open computer forum in internet explorer, u have to enter ur id and password. But u can store ur id and password in ur fingerprint software. Then next time u wil open computerforum.com, u can just log in with a swipe with ur finger.

If u know the password, u can simply bypass the fingerprint reader, as they are just an alternative to password typing.

My HP laptop has fingerprint reader, and I am amazed at its accuracy, coz till date, there has been no issue with incorrect reading, or something like that. So i will brand them as 100% fail safe.

A fingerprint reader isn't any more secure than typing in a password. It's more of a novelty with a certain element of convenience.

what about smart card?
i said this because working with and programming plc's. this required you to have a smart card inserted while using the computers.

that is right. It is just a convenient way of entering ur passwords. U dont have to type ur password, u just have to swipe ur password. It looks stylish.
