freakin "high speed" internet

hi guys.. i got a new toshiba laptop a few months ago, and for some reason, my internet is excruciatingly slow.. speed tests show it at 1200kbs, whereas the average on the highspeed cable i have is supposed to be MUCH higher

also i'm pretty sure it's the computer, because even my iphone is running 2500kbs over wifi..

before you ask, windows firewall is off, and i'm using norton's firewall, but the settings seem to be okay (i.e. nothing is blocked). i'm running vista, DC, 2GB RAM..

i'm not sure what the hell is going on here, but you can bet it's frustrating when an iphone works faster than a $1000 laptop.. any other ideas here?? thanks..

How many users are on your internet? Do you have unsecured or just WEP encryption on your wifi, as wep is almost as bad as having no security. What kind of plan are you subscribing to/what speeds are you supposed to get?

not to thread hijack or anything, but i have a quick question. Where i live, nobody in about a mile radius is computer savvy and as i have the standard virgin router, it aint going that far :P so not that fussed htat i am only on wep, but why is wep not secure? I mean, not everybody knows how to find the key, i don't and i like to think i know a thing or two about computers, that may just be because i haven't looked into hacking or anything along those liknes, but it still seems a little difficult to find it

All it takes is time, a wireless card and the right program to find a WEP key. That said, the point should be to keep the casual wardrivers off as a determined hacker, given enough time, will get in no matter what you do.

Actually, at the moment WPA2 is techincally uncrackable...:P But WEP can be cracked within a matter of minutes, and isnt very secure at all. Thats about as far as im gonna even head towards that direction, as discussion is against the forum rules.

Are you sure that your router isn't faulty or something? Because your computer/wire may not be the problem.

lmao yea i am not asking how you do it, simply why is it so easy, out of interest and so i don't get my internet banwidth nicked :P. So from what i am getting from you and cromewell, there are programs out there that can easily get the WEP code and that's what makes it so easy to get into em?

its a reasonable question. im curious and don't find it a concern. my connection is good for maybe 300 ft. only a couple can even see it. the neighbors are teacher, electronic fbi etc. On the otherhand i also run a tight ntlogin password. Oh....not for wireless but because i run a ftp service and remote software for family and friends.
interesting though. some are just geeks..........thats what they do. Thats all they do.

this was in reply to Aastii

thanks for hijacking my thread you terrorists :P jk jk

but.. i'm using WEP, and nobody's stealing my internet.. know that for a fact

other ppl around me are getting >3000kbs, and i think i should at least be getting above 2500kbs, because my iphone is even getting that much.. obviously it's something with the computer :(

so i spent about 4 hours last night messing with my router, firewall, etc etc.. did a little something called 'port forwarding' -- i'm sure you guys are experts on that -- along with a bunch of other tweaks & settings changes.. and check it out::

:D

Oh, didnt realize your iphone was using wifi there, thought you were saying thats the speeds it got via 3G. Nice improvement there in the speedtest though.
