phenom x4 940 on am3 board

no.
the AM2 chips will not run on an AM3 board
They have 940 pins on the cpu, and AM3 boards/CPUs only have 939.

AM3 boards use DDR3 instead of DDR2, so AMD purposefully made them not fit, as AM2 CPUs onboard memory controller can't handle DDR3.

Alrighty, I'm confused. On the Asus website it says my board supports AM3, but it is an AM2+ board. Would the DDR3 mem controller and different pins make them not compatible with my board?

Sorry if I hijacked the thread, I'm too lazy to make one.

AM3 processors, ddr2 memory only.

AM3 has a controller that can use both DDR3 and DDR2, and the 2 pins missing on the AM3 were worked around apparently, and will work fine in AM2+.

AM3 processors have a DDR3 and DDR2 memory controller. They will fit a AM2/+ motherboard. AM3 boards have 938 pin holes to keep you from putting a AM2/+ processor that has 940 pins in a AM3 board because AM2/+ processors do not have a DDR3 memory controller. The pin setup on the AM3 are the same as AM2/+ with just 2 pins missing. That way by mistake you cant drop a AM2/+ processor in a AM3 socket.

Long story short.

AM3 processors will fit a AM2/+ and AM3 boards.

AM2/+ processors will not fit on a AM3 board.
