Penitum Dual Core

I'm building a new rig and decided to go with a penitum dual core.
whats the general price range for the ok ones? (800 fsb, 2.5ghz 1/2mb cache)

Also, how do the pentium dual cores go against the core 2 duo's?
 
As both Andycapped and I have stated, the Pentium D is the older dual-core. Therefore the technology is inferior to the technology employed by the newer Core2Duo's and, prior to the C2D, the CoreDuo's. Since the Pentium D's etc., the technology that allows for faster speeds has, to a certain extent, shifted from pure clock speed to other factors.

The newer Pentium Dual Cores, with model numbers E****, have incorporated some of these new features, however are still not as good as the Core2Duo's, as reflected in price. The FSB's and cache are lower and smaller respectively. Nevertheless, they could still be suitable for your needs. What do you want your computer for? You could also look at some of the new AMD dual core chips, there are new Athlons and a dual core Phenom just released.

I plan on getting the E5200. Using it for schoolwork, internet, moderate gaming. I wont expect blazing fast games, but i do expect good performance on medium settings. I hope to use this with a 9400gt/9500gt. i dont need any higher.

EDIT: tell me more of these AMD dual core chips. i have sokcet 775
 
Socket 775 is only for Intel - but a lot of processors use it. It is going out of date now, nothing wrong with it at all, but the newer chips are using different sockets. You can get a Core2Duo or Core2Quad to go in LGA775. But just because the sockets match it doesn't mean it will work. I'm guessing you have a Pentium 4?!? And that you are upgrading your CPU and keeping your mobo.

If that is the case you might be limited to some of the cheaper chips as I expect your mobo is quite old. Your best bet is to search for the supported CPU list for your motherboard, if you haven't done that.

The new AMD chips use different sockets, and are AM3 compatible which is the latest socket from AMD. This would require you to get a new motherboard.

He said he was building a new rig so I'm guessing the motherboard will be fairly new.

Have you already purchased a motherboard? And for gpu, a 4670/4830 ati, or 9600gt or so nvdia would give you better performance.
 
If you are planning on purchasing a new motherboard there are better options than the Intel Pentium E5200 Processor. For $9 more ($79) you could get the Phenom 8650 Tri-Core which really beats the Pentium 5200 Dual-Core in processing power.

I have the motherboard already. I am limited to items on ebay, so if you find any good processors from there, please post a link.
There seem to be only 64-bit Radeon 4350's on ebay.
Havent searched 4670 yet.

Also I cant do newegg because they dont ship internationally. :(

My motherboard is Intel 945GTP/PLM. Google for specs.
It arrived today and i promptly put it into my case. :D
There are literally hundreds of PSU's on ebay. I have my eye on some that are 500 watts or more, with more than 20 amps.
There are some for less than $50 AU so if you need one, search ebay australia for a great deal if your in USA

Also whats wrong with the E5200? it suits my needs, and my motherobard. Any Pentium Dual Core would beat my current P4 (socket 478, 2.66ghz, no HT) into the ground. :eek:

Now thats all cleared up, I still need things to complete my setup:
RAM (too easy, for 2gb of DDR2 is less then $30au on ebay)
graphics card
PSU
HDD (If bought, must come with sata cables, mobo didnt come with any)

I'd appreciate any links to ebay items. thanks for newegg ones though, its interesting to see how prices differ from country to country, but i cant buy them. :(
 
Edit: The Pentium E5200 Processor is not compatible with your motherboard from the list I have found. None of the Core 2 Duo processors are compatible with your motherboard. The following Pentium D processors will work with your motherboard (if the information I have found is correct, which I believe is):

Pentium D 960, 950, 945, 940, 935, 930, 925, 920, 915, 840, 830, 820, and 805.

Upgrading your processor may be more of a hassle than you think. You may have to also update the BIOS in order for a Pentium D processor to work with your present motherboard. In my opinion I say you upgrade your motherboard and processor at the same time. Get an AMD Phenom processor.

Also those power supplies you have selected look like they are cheap quality. I wouldn't bid anymore than $100 on this Antec 550 Watt Power Supply, but take a look:
