What should I look for when putting together a pc?

The last time I upgraded my system I pretty much just looked for a fairly good motherboard that was compatible with an equally good processor, and that was pretty much it. Recently I discovered that a friend of mine, that piece by piece has a much slower system that me, still manages to get plenty more fps from games and such. So I was just wondering what are the key elements to look for when pairing up components such as motherboards / processors etc in order to get the best result? Apparently I have failed in this, so there must be a way to it.

That could be pretty much b/c he has a better GPU than you do. your GPU has much more to do with gaming performance than anything else.

Might want to post your system specs and budget for a build if that's what you are considering - and what you use it for / or are wanting your PC to do - for some suggestions.

Your graphics card may have only 64-bit memory. as was the case with my old GeForce 6200. The rest of the specs were good, but the 64-bit memory totally killed any chance of good fps in games. If you get a graphics card, make sure it has 128-bit memory as a minimum. most new cards come with 256bit or 512bit nowadays.

Yep 90% of the PC build is RESEARCHING the parts. Choose the best parts for the price and you get the best PC for the price.
