9800GX2 as a dedicated physx card

Can I use a dual GPU card as a dedicated physx card? And if so would the game also have to support SLI for both GPUs to be used for physx?

I'm getting at least one GTX 285 for my birthday from my brother and possibly another from my dad so I thought it might be a good idea to have my GX2 as a physx card ^_^

honestly, i would just sell the gx2, and buy a gtx 285/ buy a 260, if you don't want to cough up the extra money

>_> I'm not buying a GTX 285 for a freaking physx card, or any other card for that matter. My thread is about using the 9800GX2 that I have now as a physx card once I get my new graphics cards.

I would sell the card and use it to get another GTX285 for sli, or get an 8800gt for physx..

Well my friend has an 8800GTS so should I trade him my GX2 for his GTS being that the GTS would be of better use to me? I know the GX2 is worth more money but since it's dual GPU isn't as valuable to me.

With dual GTX 285s running....a dedicated physx card would not be a good idea. The dual GTX 285 cards will trash anything you can throw at them.

1. You will also need a bigger power supply. Something 1000w or more. Running those three cards...you are going to need some major power. Not worth the $200+ price tag for a huge PSU.

2. I will be willing to bet you that the system will be a little unstable. I have known a few people that have tried to run dedicated physx cards and they always end up going back to a normal set up.

The performance gain will be minimal at best...:D

There is a huge market for GX2 cards right now. Serious Folders are looking everywhere around the world for them. You can run two GPU clients at the same time on the same card. These cards are going for $200+ a piece with ease;) There are a few used cards going for almost $300:eek:

Sell the thing, you will have almost enough money to get another GTX285 and sli it. As scout said, they are like the best folding card for the money, so people will pay decent prices for them. Although if you want a dedicated physx card...ill trade you my 9800gtx for your gx2:P

Alright close this thread no one is reading anything. Are you people completely ****ing blind? I'm not buying another ****ing card for physx I'm wondering about the one I have right ****ing NOW! I'm going to get two GTX 285's for my birthday and I want to use my old graphics card for physx, not buy a third ****ing card.

And I talked to OCZ about the replacement PSU they are sending me, which is a 910W silencer and they told me it could run a core i7 system with 3 GTX 285's easily so I don't think I'll be in any trouble. The 910W puts out 74A RMS and 82A peak.

WE KNOW YOU ALREADY HAVE ONE....HAVE YOU EVEN LOOKED AT OUR POSTS?

I told you to sell the GX2...you can get at least $250 for it right now:D

What we are saying is that your old card will not work for physx, and your best option to do with the old card would be to sell it, and use that to get a card for physx if you want a card for physx, or to use it towards another gtx285 for sli/tri-sli.

A used GX2 is worth $250? Do you think I should buy an actual physx card or would an 8800GTS 512mb be better for a physx card?

I think a dedicated Phyxs card will be more of a trouble. With a pair of GTX 285 cards...you'll crush anything you throw at it.

Look at how much used GX2 cards are going for...Folders are doing everything they can to get their hands on these cards. And you have an eVGA GX2...you can get $250 easy:)

I have seen people try and use a dedicated card several times. They always end up back without one because of system instability and many other issues.

actual physx cards are weak, only use for them is in an ati system. To be honest i would sell your 9800gx2 at $250-300, use it towards another gtx285 and tri sli them. In tri sli, there is no need for a dedicated physx card as the cards will have plenty of horsepower, and you'll have a rig that will play pretty much any game out there at the moment;) Or you could always buy something like a 9800gtx/gts250 and run it as a physx card.

Well my friend has basically all the same hardware specs as me except he doesn't have 2GB of g.skill ram and he has my old 8800GTS card so I want his system to run better because I'm sure that my GX2 would give him a nice boost so I was going to just do a straight up trade with him to be nice so I think I'll just do that and go from there in the future if I want to spend more money.
