The Pirate Bay Sold For $7.8 Million

Original owners said some sort of interesting things about the sale:

If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That’s the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to.
So it sounds like they suspect it will die if it tries to become legit.
But then went on to say

And – you can now not only share files, but share with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That’s awesome and will take the heat of us.The old crew is still around in different ways. We will also not stop being active in the politics of the internets – quite the opposite. Now we’re fueling up for going into the next gear. TPB will have economical muscles to let people evolve it. It will team up with great technicians to evolve the protocols. And we, the people interested in more than just technology, will have the time to focus on that. It’s win-win-win.

So it seems a little unclear what their and the sites future plans are.

Let's face it, TBP as we know it is dead. 7.8 mil is a pittance compared to what it would have been worth before all of the legal troubles.

I imagine the new owners will keep the name, but take it in a completely different direction... I can't imagine a way of indexing torrent tracking that would both legal and popular.

The pirate bay hasn't been sold yet, its scheduled to happen for this August.
I reckon it was the legal troubles that brought them all the publicity.

Check the wiki, and the PB blog.

At any rate, they're working on a deal to protect themselves, and I can't blame them. After everything they've done, why not walk out with some cash? They will not be allowed to continue like this forever.

I agree 7 mill and free from the trouble that is coming. Smart people...slapped and teased the big companies then get payed out and saved before they finally get to crush them.

I always had respect for the people of TPB even though id never get caught dead using their tracker.

The selling of The Pirate Bay hardly saves them. The people behind TPB are being prosecuted, not the organization, and the prosecution includes criminal charges.

I've never used the Pirate Bay, but with high cost of some CDs/DVDs/Books, it's no wonder people want to pay less to buy copies.

I read that to prevent the prosecution from taking any profits from the sale of the
pirate bay, they transfered ownership to someone else back in 2006/2007.

TBP isn't dead by anymeans. A Swedish gaming group bought it, and it's not sold for 7.8million. There are also alot of other transactions going on, stock, assets, etc., making the entire ordeal a $30mil USD transaction. If they bought it for that much, they have plans for it. It's one of the top 100 internationally visited sites, and they wouldn't dare lose that.

The tracker is great, and they'll still be prosecuted. The money taken was paid to the company, not the individuals, and they won't use the immediate payment for their court settlement.

I'm sure they have plan for it, but what I said was The Pirate Bay as we know it is dead. Whatever they have in store for it wont be anything like it is now.
