Can I do Raid 1 on Dimension 4500

I'm looking at setting up my Old Dell as a File of NAS server with linux O/S. I'm wondering if I can set up RAID 1 with the MOBO in that Computer.

It's Pentium 4 - Dell Dimension 4500.

Also - Raid is new to me - can I use a standard 7200 IDE HDD as a RAID drive - or would I need a different technology to pull that off?

The dimension 4500 isn't raid compatible by motherboard alone. You would have to get a PCI IDE or SATA raid controller card and set it up that way. You need a minimum of 2 drives to setup any raid array.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of Raid controllers.

The MOBO is 5 years old and doesn't have any SATA technology on it. I'm not familiar with RAID controllers. The price range is pretty wide - I see $250.00 down to $19.95.

Would one of these do the trick?

That card doesn't support IDE raid only SATA raid so you would have to use SATA hard drives. You would have to find one that supports IDE unless you wanted to buy new SATA hard drives.
