Hard Drive Warranty

Hi! I've been looking at hard drives on ebay, and a question came to mind. How do you read the warranty info on a drive? Is there a web page that has this info? Any and all responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
 
You going to want to contact the seller for warranty info. The main brands offer 3 year warranties on most of their hard drives, but you need a receipt as proof of purchase from an authorized retailer, which an eBay seller may or may not be able to provide.
 
Thanks for the response. Sorry, I didn't make myself clear before. I mean the numbers on the drive itself. I know there are a set of numbers on a drive that you can use to look up the warranty date---when the warranty is up.
 
The warranty starts at the date of purchase, not when it was manufactured. Most manufactures just have a standard policy that covers any non-refurbished hard drive, it usually doesn't vary between models.
 
I bought a seagate. Has 5 year warranty. The date on the harddrive is one month
before I bought it. So you can be sure the person bought it a few months after it was
manufactured.
 
^Seagate knocked down their warranty to three years a few months back. Of course if you bought it before they made the announcement, then you'll get the five years.

This has been changed for some manufacturers, specifically WD and Seagate.

In the past 18 months, I've bought two brand new hard drives, a WD (OEM from Newegg) and a Seagate (retail from CompUSA). When I went to each company's website to look at warranty info, I was asked the model number and the serial number of each drive and was told when the warranty expired. I was never asked the date when I actually purchased the drives, nor was I asked the name of the retailer. Also, the paperwork included with the retail Seagate specifically instructed owners to go to the Seagate website for warranty info.

The only time the actual purchase date matters is for the seller's defective product return privileges, which is usually 30 days.
