Budget system: AMD or Intel?

I currently have an Intel 945GTP mobo, it supports up to a Pentium D for socket 775. I was thinking of reselling that mobo and getting a cheap AM2 Board with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 (4400+).

would this be worth the trouble and cost to change to AMD?
The cheapest 4400+ i can find is going for $59 + $14 postage.
The cheapest pentium d i can find is about $120.

I would not get an AM2 board. I got and AM2+/AM3 board so I can future proof my system. As far as budgeting goes, AMD all the way. My Phenom X3 with Stock Fan was only $74.99. You can get an AM2+/AM3 board for $60. RAM is so cheap you can get 4gb for like $40.
I reccommend the Phenom X3 or X4 series for the money.
If you have to get the AM2, go for the FX-62.

I'm a little out of date with amd, my last amd system was an AMD Athlon XP 1200+...
All i really need from this system is to be able to play my steam games on max settings... not that demanding.
 
Yeah i'd get an AM2+ board, some ddr2-800, and something like an AMD 7750.
OMG COINCEDINCE i have a 7750 with the stock hs/f. great chip, played my tf2 and hl2 great.

You might be able to get a VCD, RAM, CPU, and MOBO for less than $250 that will suffice for gaming needs.

Just some suggestions. Pretty Cheap Total around like

$260.

I under stand your in AU, I was just giving you some suggestions at what to look for.

My board only cost me about £70 or so, compare that to the striker extreme that was out at the time, it was about 4 times the price of my board. The difference?

The striker is bigger (atx, mine is mid atx), is triple sli, has better cooling across the nb, x16 when in sli and that is about it.

Both overclock great, in so much as i have a friend with the striker board and used to have the same processor as me and here is an example (remember all chips are different, but still...)

His system:

Asus Striker Extreme board
Intel E6750 processor stock 2.66GHz, oc to 3.4GHz

Mine:

Asus P5N-E SLI
Intel E6750 processoer, stock 2.66GHz, oc to 3.8GHz

The highest he was able to get the processor stable was 3.4, i have had 3.8, so price doesn't always=quality, my £70 board is known for being one of the best budget boards you can get, for the reason that it performs as well as the more expensive ones and is reliable.

The only component where price always resembles quality is the power supply, you can decent cheap hard drives, optical drives, the cheap video cards act not too bad compared to the most expensive in the same series, same with processors and memory
